Artist and young entrepreneur Molly Russell has started her own business.  She specializes in painting portraits of animals.  Here's her story:

Name:  Molly Russell               Age:  24          Job title:  Animal Artist           Employer:  Self

What do you do?  I paint animal portraits

How long have you been doing it?  I've been drawing since I could hold a crayon and painting since I was in the 7th grade, but I've made animals my main focus for about a year now.

How did you get into this work?  My mom is an artist so with her influence and my natural talent and drive, creating art has always been a part of my life.  After working for various animal shelters and pet-sitting companies, I started noticing that there was a real market for animal products.  So I created a portfolio, used my contacts from the animal organizations I had been a part of and started networking and creating a name for myself as an animal artist.  Mainly through word of mouth, my business continues to grow.

What do you like about your job?  It allows me to combine the two passions that I feel most strongly about: art and animals.  I also love seeing my clients' reactions when I finish a painting and hand it over!

What don't you like about your job?  Sometimes it's hard to find motivation at the beginning of a project.  A blank canvas can seem daunting, but once I push myself and get the ball rolling, I forget why I was even worried in the first place!

Additional comments:  Whenever I get down on myself, or my self-confidence is lacking, I always remind myself of my favorite quote: "We're not put on this earth to be happy, we're here to experience great things."  My life here on earth is a gift and I'm not about to waste it staring at that blank canvas!
